Buttermilk Chive Biscuits

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/3 cup chilled vegetable shortening
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 1/4 cup Parmesan or Romano cheese, grated
- 1 cup fresh chives, snipped, or 1/2 cup dried chives
- Milk
Directions
Preheat oven to 450°. Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Cut in the chilled shortening with a pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Make a well in the center and pour in buttermilk, cheeses, and chives. Blend well until mixture holds together. Knead on lightly floured board 5 or 6 times. Do not overwork. Pat dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with floured biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased pan and brush tops with milk. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until browned.
