Two more ways to celebrate the Derby

Could your Derby week celebrations include a visit to a thoroughbred farm? Horse Country can help you book public, private and group tours at an array of Kentucky farms and other equine-related locations.

Formats and schedules vary by farm and time of the year. They include tours for viewing stallions, mares and foals; and interactive and family-friendly tours.

Derby winners standing as stallions at breeding farms that participate in Horse Country tours are Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Versailles; Street Sense and Nyquist at Darley’s Jonabell Farm, Lexington; Always Dreaming at WinStar, Versailles; Authentic at Lexington’s Spendthrift Farm; and Country House at Darby Dan, Lexington.

International Museum of the Horse: “Celebrating the connection between horses and humans”

The International Museum of the Horse in Lexington opened in 1978 in conjunction with the launch of the Kentucky Horse Park. The museum describes itself as “the largest and most comprehensive museum in the world dedicated to exploring the important history of all horses and their impact on human civilization.”

Permanent exhibits include the Calumet Farm Collection, Affirmed: The Making of a Champion and Black Horsemen of the Kentucky Turf.
