Shopping takes center stage in Historic Horse Cave
Boutiques, books, antiques, art, food and even a cave. The many offerings in downtown Horse Cave are highlighted in a new Shop Horse Cave map. The charming town is 10 miles from Mammoth Cave National Park and located at exit 58 off Interstate 65.
The Shop Horse Cave map celebrates the 20th anniversary of Downtown Horse Cave’s designation as a National Register of Historic Places Commercial District and was created by Horse Cave/Hart County Tourism.
The map features a dozen small businesses clustered on Water Street and along the quaint Main Street that runs past and on top of Hidden River Cave, shown at right, the centerpiece of the district. Businesses include the largest independently owned bookstore in south-central Kentucky, two antique shops, a home decor store, art studio/shop, two boutiques, a shoe store, museum and three restaurants.
“Shopping is an important part of a visitor’s trip,” says Horse Cave/Hart County Tourism Executive Director Sandra T. Wilson. “In fact, travel industry research shows shopping is the No. 1 activity for tourists, with small-town shops being especially attractive.”
