Glasgow Band Champs

The Glasgow Scottie Marching Band of the Glasgow Independent School District marched away as Class 2A State Champions for the third time in four years.

The competition, sponsored by the Kentucky Music Educators Association, was held in October at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. The show’s name “The Great Rhapsody” featured Rhapsody in Blue, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 with a Great Gatsby motif.

Band parent Cindy Martin says, “I am incredibly proud of all these students, and they deserve recognition for all their hard work. Our band is filled with very talented individuals.”

Martin’s sons Dylan, 16, and Grayson, 15, have been band members since 6th grade.

“Some of these kids have known each other since pre-school or kindergarten and they’re like family,” Martin explains.

Band director Corey Bonds, now in his seventh year, says, “I’m very blessed to have the opportunity to have these kids. The marching band practices on average eight hours a week and they’re very dedicated.”

Until four years ago the band wore traditional Scottish regalia, including kilts, as their competition uniform. At that time, for ease of movement, it was replaced with slacks and a dark royal blue and black uniform jacket trimmed in the band’s traditional Musselburgh tartan for competition only. However, their traditional Scottish uniform continues to be worn for all other events.
