Your article wildflower penstemon made me think that they might grow in our garden area. Where can they be purchased?
The Gardener’s Answer
Hello, Ed: Yes! Penstemon, commonly known as beardtongue, is a great choice for a perennial garden in Kentucky. Ideally located in a dry, sunny location, these native wildflowers are available in variety of colors, growth habits and interesting foliage. There are many species and varieties but all produce tubular flowers that are sure to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. They are also great for cut flowers.
As far as finding this perennial, it shouldn’t be too hard. Since there are so many varieties to choose from, your local garden center(s) are sure to carry a few choices. Plants will start arriving later in the spring, but it can’t hurt to start calling around to see what varieties they have sold previous seasons. If there is a specific variety that you want, this would be a good time to ask if it could be special ordered. I hope this is helpful.
