Relocating rasberries
Annette Asked
Hello,
My mom planted a few raspberry canes years ago. A few days ago, I started cutting down weeds and found them. I would like to move them or take growths and restart the canes somewhere else. My question is how to do this and when is the best time to move raspberries. Can raspberries be moved, or do you have to take a cutting?
Thanks,
Annette Hines
The Gardener’s Answer
Hi Annette, Raspberries can be transplanted during the late fall and early spring. They can also be propagated by digging up suckers (primocanes) that grow from the roots. Spring is the best time to separate the suckers from the parent plant and get them in their new home. Keep the roots and soil intact as much as possible when digging up the suckers. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil for optimal fruit production. It is always a good idea to prep the new space before digging up the existing plant. The less time spent out of the ground the better. Be sure to give the newly transplanted raspberries plenty of moisture as they get settled. Provide some sort of vertical structure to support the canes as they grow.
