Pruning lemon trees

Bob Asked

I have one about 9’ tall with no branches. Can I prune it in October?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi Bob, Thanks for sending a picture. Is your lemon growing in a container? It looks like it is surrounded by other container grown plants, but it is hard to tell if the lemon is in the ground, or in a container. These citrus are considered tropical for Kentucky gardeners. They are hardy in USDA hardiness zones 8-11. Grayson county is considered zones 6b-7a on the USDA hardiness zone map. The winter temperatures are too low for lemons to survive outside in Kentucky. They need to brought indoors for protection. Hopefully yours is already in a container. Prune it back to make it manageable to bring inside. This will also encourage more lateral branching. Place in a sunny south-facing window. Your watering routine will depend on the temperature and humidity of your home but once a week should be sufficient. Once the chance of frost has passed in the spring, it will be safe to take back outside. Slowly acclimate it back into the full sun and enjoy for another growing season.
