Privacy screen in shaded area

Ken Asked

Neighbor built an unsightly structure (white fence in photo) near the rear of my property, but in area that is very shaded by trees. In the summer it is obscured, but not in winter. Is there a tree or shrub that will thrive in shade that I can plant in front of the structure for year-round screening?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi Ken, I had to look very closely at your photo. I initially thought you were referring to the white fence but then I saw the metal dog and fire hydrant sculptures. There are several shade-loving evergreen options that could work for your needs. Mahonia, aucuba, evergreen azaleas, pieris japonica, and schip laurels are all options. It is hard to tell from the picture how tall the metal sculptures are, but mahonia and schip laurel are the tallest of options and should provide the height needed to disguise them. The tricky part will be digging around the tree roots. Keep in mind that anything you plant will be competing for moisture and nutrients from the surrounding trees. You could also use a large container or grouping of containers to create a focal point and hide what you don’t want to see. Evergreens can be grown in containers, but they don’t want to live there forever. They will eventually need to be replaced. Since it is just visible during the cold months, you could use an assortment of cut greens to fill the container(s). The greens will eventually turn brown, but the surrounding landscape will be greening up.
