Planting a cypress tree
Tammy Asked
Can I plant this European cypress outside in the ground on top of a hill? It would be well drained land not holding water, plenty of sunlight, as it would be facing east and west. Should I repot it and wait til fall to plant or is now (April) ok to plant if it can be planted outside?
The Gardener’s Answer
Hi, Tammy: Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Elwoodii’ is an evergreen that is best grown in full to part sun and well-drained soil. This species is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 5-7. Warren County is considered 6b-7a. These Falsecypress do not thrive in excessive heat and are best planted in a sheltered location. Plant now and be sure sufficient moisture is available as it establishes a root system. Dig the hole twice as wide and just as deep as the container it is currently growing in. Back fill with good quality, nutrient-rich soil. A layer of mulch will help in terms of moisture retention and winter protection.
