Perennials

Debbie Asked

What perennial will grow in full sun and is moisture tolerant?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi, Debbie: A healthy garden begins with healthy soil and plants that will thrive in the conditions that your garden can provide. Knowing that you are dealing with moist soil is essential for choosing the best plant material. Sun-loving perennials that are tolerant of moist soil include: Iris siberica, Swamp Rose Mallow (hardy Hibiscus), Bee Balm (Monarda), Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus), and Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium). These are just a few suggestions and depending your space you could plant in combination. I have had good luck with baptisia, milkweed, and verbena in my garden that has similar conditions. Creeping jenny (lysmachia) and Plumbago are  groundcover options. Many of the ornamental grasses including: Miscanthus, Calamagrostis, Panicum, and Carex are all possibilities to consider. I apologize for the delayed response. Happy Planting!
