Ground cover plants and erosion

Irene Asked

What ground cover plants works well in Kentucky to prevent erosion?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi, Irene: Ground covers are a great answer to preventing erosion. As they establish they will help keep the soil in place. It is important to first determine the growing conditions before choosing a specific groundcover. All plants have their own preference in terms of environment. Some can tolerate a full day of sun and others need shade. Same goes for soil conditions. Is the soil that you are planting in wet or does it drain well? Growing conditions will narrow down the best options for a successful planting. For a detailed list of perennial ground covers for Kentuckygardeners visit:

It is also a good idea to have your soil tested before planting. This can be done at your local County Extension Service.
