David Asked
In your January issue you wrote about the plant amsonia. Can you tell how or where I can purchase this plant? Everywhere I have been in Shelbyville, no one has ever heard of it. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time
The Gardener’s Answer
Hello, David: Some garden centers are willing to special order plants in for their clients so you may try this route. It really just depends on what growers they buy from and if they even have access to this plant or not. If you are willing to make the drive to Louisville we carry Amsonia at The Plant Kingdom on Westport Road. Let us know if you would like us to hold a plant for you since they seem to be tricky to keep in this season. You can reach us at (502) 893-7333. Amsonia hubrichtii, also known as Blue Star is an herbaceous perennial that grows best when planted in full sun to part shade. This low-maintenance plant will reach 2-3 feet tall at maturity. It has powdery blue flowers that bloom during the spring, lasting for 3-4 weeks. During the fall is when it puts a on a real show in the garden. It’s airy foliage that turns a brilliant yellow and lasts until we have a hard freeze. Amsonia dies back to the ground during the winter months but is well worth planting for its 3 season interest. You may also check out your local farmers markets to see if anybody there has it or can get it for you.
