Do I need to add anything to soil when planting shrubs?
Samantha Asked
I have never planted shrubs here and was wondering if anything such as cottonseed hull would need to be put in the holes? Or can you just add some soil?
The Gardener’s Answer
Hi, Samantha: Healthy soil is essential for a happy, long-lived garden. A soil test is great way to determine if your soil is in need of nutrients. The test will indicate current nutrient levels and pH. Soil compaction can also be determined. This is an issue with new construction and can inhibit water, air and nutrient movement. The results will give suggestions for improvement if necessary. Cottonseed meal is a great organic option if you end up needing nitrogen. The Bourbon County Cooperative Extension Service offers soil testing for a minimal fee. The offices are located at 603 Millersburg Rd. The phone number is (859) 987-1895. I hope this is helpful.
