Burning bushes

Merilyn Asked

Planted 18 months ago, four burning bushes. Not doing well. Their leaves turn copper in June and don’t turn red in the fall, yet they seem to be growing. Any ideas?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi Merilyn, Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus) is a non-native, very popular landscape plant that will grow almost anywhere. This ornamental is known for its beautiful fall color. The amount of sunlight has a direct correlation with the vibrancy of fall color. Six hours of direct sunlight is ideal. Those growing in shade will not have the same intensity. Fall colors will start showing when temperatures begin to drop and we have cool nights with warm days. Consistent moisture levels can also play a role in determining fall color but the amount of sunlight is the biggest factor.
