Patti’s 1880’s Settlement
Embrace holiday charm at this historic gem in Grand Rivers
FIVE YEARS AFTER PATTI’S 1880’s Settlement reopened its signature restaurant after a devastating fire shut it down for 21 months, the western Kentucky phenomenon is the most popular it has ever been.
Its unique slice of Southern hospitality combined with pioneer charm creates what co-CEO Ann Martin describes as “a magical, down-to-earth place.” Patti’s has become an anchor for Grand Rivers, regularly drawing visitors from several states to experience its homestyle dining, historic architecture and holiday festivities.
Martin, who stepped into her role as co-CEO in 2020, along with Terri Vaughn, has worked diligently to uphold the legacy of the family-owned business. Their journey has included the challenges of rebuilding after the devastating fire in 2018, supported by an involved community. “After the fire, we were determined to keep people updated, showing our progress to let them know we’d be back and stronger than ever,” she recalls.
Today, Patti’s spans a network of reconstructed 1800s cabins from neighboring counties. With a conscious decision to not offer Wi-Fi, Patti’s encourages families to put their phones in their pockets and enjoy the experience together.
Strolling through the timeless village of eight separate boutiques, gardens and miniature golf course, visitors shop, dine and are reminded of a time “when things moved slower.”
Servers clad in rustic attire add authenticity, and signature offerings, like bread baked in flowerpots and house-made strawberry butter, keep patrons coming back year after year.
As one of the largest employers in Livingston County, Patti’s employs more than 260 staff members, many of whom have been part of the team for decades. “Our employees are what makes the Settlement,” Martin says, emphasizing how the close-knit team brings warmth and hospitality to every guest interaction. The sense of family extends to their operations, with Martin proudly noting that multiple generations now work together at Patti’s.
The holiday season is particularly special there, with 75,000 visitors in December alone. The historic grounds transform with elaborate Christmas decorations, festive lights and interactive holiday events, including character breakfasts and Santa appearances. The popular lights display extends into January, giving guests a chance to enjoy the magic of Patti’s after the holiday rush.
After nearly 48 years in operation, Patti’s remains a cherished tradition for many families, and under Martin and Vaughn’s leadership, it continues to thrive as a nostalgic retreat for locals and tourists alike. “In today’s world, every day brings a new challenge,” Martin reflects, “but seeing families return and bring the next generation along is what makes it all worthwhile.”
