Lights, Safety… And Chickens?

Safety lessons from Hazard Hamlet

By November last year, more than 1,800 students had participated in Cumberland Valley Electric cooperative’s newly re-established school electrical safety
program. The students receive practical exposure to electrical safety and information about electricity covered in their curriculum through a Model Tech Hazard Hamlet that simulates safety hazards.

“Safety is number one,” says Ted Hampton, president and CEO of Cumberland Valley Electric co-op. “It is the top priority for our entire company. We never want a child to get hurt. This program also teaches energy conservation—simple things that can make a difference, like turning off lights.”

Chickens for the United Way

Jackson Energy helped raise just over $3,000 for United Way of Laurel County and London Downtown during the World Chicken Festival by participating in the Chicken Invasion. Community groups and businesses such as Jackson Energy Co-op painted a wooden chicken and community
members voted for their favorite chicken by donating $1 per vote.

“Our lineman chicken was a great way to highlight our company, give one of our employees an opportunity to showcase his artistic talents, and also raise money for local charities,” says Jackson Energy President and CEO Carol Wright.

Some 300 members visited Hickman-Fulton Counties Rural Electric Cooperative on Fridays last fall as part of the cooperative’s fourth annual Fluorescent Fridays. Members came to celebrate the co-op and register to win a $200 bill credit. They left with light bulbs, caulking, wall calendars, pocket calendars, ink pens, and even surprises for the children.

“We are always looking for ways to touch our members and mark October as Co-op Month,” says Greg Grissom, president and CEO of Hickman-Fulton Counties Rural Electric Co-op. “Fluorescent Fridays are a way to do this and make our customers more aware of energy savings through weatherization and the use of CFL light bulbs.”
