EKPC engineer powering Afghanistan
Jeff Schaefer, on right, an engineer with East Kentucky Power Cooperative’s Spurlock Power Station, was recalled to active duty in Afghanistan as a U.S. Navy Reserve sailor. As electrical program manager, Schaefer works with organizations to bring more import power to meet the growing demand, while connecting the Afghan military and police facilities to the “grid” for improved sustainability of the country.
His brother Kevin, also an electrical engineer, worked in Afghanistan as a contractor developing facilities design, electrical infrastructure designs, capacity and feasibility studies, cost analysis, and master planning documents for the International Security Assistance Force.
The two brothers met face-to-face in Afghanistan on a few occasions. Their mother reminded them that it had been five years since they had seen each other.
