Vacation Alternatives

Terrorism threats and war worries have combined with economic uncertainties to cause many Kentuckians to alter vacation plans.

Tourism-dependent spots, such as Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Florida, have found that would-be vacationers are having second thoughts. Florida, a favorite destination of many locals, had a record number of tourists last year, but they spent less than in the past.

Resort camping

So what’s a winter-weary person to do for a getaway or for minimal cost? There’s been a surge in camping, according to outdoors equipment stores and campground operators.

A spokesman for Kampgrounds of America says its resort-like sites are getting many new campers, especially those who favor such amenities as hot showers and miniature golf. The organization recommends reservations and offers a Web site, www.koa.com.

If travel funds are low, consider camping out with the kids in the back yard, or play local tourist. Call your nearby Chamber of Commerce or Kentucky Parks Department, (800) 255-7275, for suggestions.

Togetherness vacations

There has also been a boom in “togetherness vacations,” or several generations getting together to reminisce and swap old photos.

Keys to making a generational vacation a success are: advance planning, finding a place that offers a variety of activities, both on-site and off, for all ages, and amenities such as a microwave and dishwasher so the adults don’t become “kitchen slaves.”
