Ohio Valley Birding Festival
More than 40 seminars, workshops, hikes, and crafts for all ages and levels of interest on birds, birding, and bird habitats will be held in the Henderson area, April 21-22 and April 25-29. The festival is presented by John James Audubon State Park, Evansville Audubon Society, Evansville Wild Birds Unlimited, and Wesselman Nature Society. There are numerous free seminars and hikes for adults and children. A free family day for kids of all ages will be on Saturday, April 28, at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve with 20 stations and nine workshops; no pre-registration required. April Wildflowers Bring Fun
You’ll find a myriad of wildflowers at all Kentucky State Parks, but you’ll have the guidance of park field naturalists at some special events. John James Audubon State Park in Henderson has its Wildflower Extravaganza on April 7, free; Carter Caves State Resort Park, Olive Hill, hosts a Wildflower Pilgrimage on April 20-22, $10; and Natural Bridge State Resort Park near Slade has its 32nd Wildflower Weekend, April 27-29; open to the public, adults $10, $3 ages 13-17, free 12 and under. Or if you like taking wildflower pictures, check out the April 20-22 photography weekends at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park (adults $30 before April 13 or $35 after, ages 16 and under $10) and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park ($35 before April 14 or $45 after). Redbud Bunny Express
Celebrate spring in Stearns as Big South Fork Scenic Railway’s newest engineer, Redbud the bunny, shares all the beautiful colors. Be sure to bring a camera for your visit and photos with Redbud throughout the day. Departs at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 7. Hillbilly Days Festival
This unique festival, April 19-21, presented by the Shriners, draws 150,000 people to downtown Pikeville to benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children—Lexington with fireworks Thursday night and a parade Saturday at 2 p.m. Family entertainment includes music, craft booths, food, carnival rides (ticket fee), quilt show, cornhole, run/walk, and more.
