Preparing a loved one for surgery

• Encourage them to stop smoking before their surgery.

• Bring insurance card and picture ID.

• Bring copies of any living will, healthcare surrogate, and power of attorney or guardianship papers.

• Bring a list of current medications (prescription drugs, vitamins, and homeopathic remedies), including how much you take and when, or bring the medications (in their original containers) with you.

• Tell the doctor about any allergies to medicines or food.

• Make sure they wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and low-heeled shoes.

• Bring a case to store glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, or dentures during surgery.

• Pack an overnight bag, including personal care items, if staying in the hospital.

• Bring a favorite toy or blanket for children having surgery.

• Arrive on time the day of the procedure to avoid delays or cancellation.

• Drive them home after checking out of the hospital. Someone should stay at home with them for at least 24 hours.
