Pioneer Life Week
Visit Carter Caves State Resort Park on July 19-25 for a week dedicated to the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the settlement of lands around the Ohio River. Programs include tomahawk throwing, black-powder rifle demonstrations, spinning and weaving, re-enactors, music, and food. County Fair Day is on Saturday and includes displays of arrowheads, woodcarving, Appalachian toys and games, a pie auction, seed-spitting contests, and authentic pioneer vittles. Family Freedom Fireworks Festival
The 5th annual Family Freedom Fireworks Festival in Owensboro will have activities for all ages. The festival concludes with a fireworks display to celebrate the nation’s birthday. This year the event takes place July 3. Go online to www.daviesscountyparks.com to find out more.

Kentucky Shaker Music Day
Stop by Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, above, in Harrodsburg on July 17 for Kentucky Shaker Music Day. The Pleasant Hill Singers will perform Music of the Black Shakers, a celebration of the African-American Shaker experience in song and interpretive dance. Throughout the day, listen to special guests Appalachian Association of Sacred Heart Singers perform in the shape-note tradition.
