Bluegrass Music Kickoff, Audubon’s “wild” Toddler Programs, And More

The Heart of Kentucky Bluegrass Music Kickoff, January 27-28 at Lebanon’s Roby Dome, features performers such as headliner Grammy-nominated group The Grascals, along with Gary “Biscuit” Davis, a three-time national banjo-picking champion, Michael Johnathon of WoodSongs, Hagar’s Mountain Boys, and the Moron Brothers. Bluegrass musicians will have the opportunity to come on stage and perform their favorite song with Davis on Friday night. Musician workshops are held on Saturday. On the Wild Side
The John James Audubon State Park in Henderson offers 45-minute to one-hour interactive Walk on the Wild Side nature programs for toddlers, ages 3-5. Upcoming programs are January 27 “Winter Treats,” February 24 “Wiggly Worms,” March 9 “Tree Mural,” March 23 “Who Lives in a Tree,” April 27 “Pecking Proficiency,” and May 25 “Hooked on Fishing,” all at 10 a.m. on Fridays. Cure your fever at Carter Caves State Resort Park, Olive Hill, at the 3rd annual Winter Adventure Weekend, January 27-29. There’s hiking, recreational tree climbing, winter birding or tree ID, cave tours, rappelling, winter survival zip-lining, geocaching, campfire cooking, and lots of other adventure programs and workshops. Commemorating 150 Years of Civil War
In honor of the Sesquicentennial, the 4th Battle of Mill Springs Re-enactment will be January 21-22 at Zollicoffer Park in Nancy. All battles will be fought in real time with soldiers camping out and dressing as they did 150 years ago. The public can watch two battles on Saturday, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and one Sunday at 1 p.m. Fire a Civil War cannon on Saturday if you’re the winner of the $1 raffle! Re-enactors can still sign up until January 20. Mill Springs Battlefield Visitors’ Center is located at 9020 W. Hwy 80, 8 miles west of Somerset.
